County employee receives national award

Norma Doctor Sparks, the director of the Santa Clara County Department of Family and Children’s Services, was named one of the 100 most influential Filipina women in the United States.

Sparks was honored for her work to make a difference in government policies and laws. A native of Hawaii, Sparks received the award from the Filipina Women’s Network during the 5th Annual Filipina Summit in Washington, D.C.

Sparks runs the operations of the 700-employee DFCS and is credited with initating programs for improving child welfare services. She previously worked at the American Management Systems and was an administrator with a number of state agencies in Hawarii.

Register now for spring classes

New and continuing students can now register for spring classes at Gavilan College. Spring semester begins Jan. 30. Classes are offered days, evenings, weekends and online. Continuing students may register in person or on-line at www.gavilan.edu. New students may register in person at Gavilan College locations in Gilroy, Morgan Hill or Hollister.

Gilroy main campus:

Through Jan. 18 (closed Dec. 22 to Jan. 1): 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday; and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Jan.  22 to 25: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday; and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday

Jan. 29 to Feb. 7: 8 a.m.to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday; and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday

Morgan Hill and Hollister:

Through Feb. 7 (closed Dec. 22 to Jan. 1, Jan. 21 and Jan. 28): 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday; and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday
