Fire Season Over

After a relatively uneventful fire season locally, the Santa Clara unit of the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection will declare the fire season officially at an end at 8am on Monday. The end-of-season declaration has been approved by CDF Sacramento.

The end of the season also ends the burning ban in the Bay Area. CDF recommends residents observe the end of the fire season by servicing home heating systems and double-checking smoke detectors.

Don’t Be a Turkey, Arrive Alive for Thanksgiving

One of the biggest travel times of the year is during the Thanksgiving holiday, when many people are off work on Thursday and Friday and travel to spend the holiday with family and friends.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the official driving time begins Wednesday at 6pm and continues through the end of the day Sunday.

During this time period last year, 60 people were killed in California, according to CHP statistics, and half of those people were not wearing a seat belt. More than 1,500 people were arrested for driving under the influence.

That’s why the CHP will implement a maximum enforcement period (MEP), which means every available officer is out on patrol, according to CHP Capt. Brent Newman of the Hollister-Gilroy office.

“Obey the speed limit, don’t drink and drive and be sure to buckle up,” Newman said. “Be prepared for traffic tie-ups, especially on the Wednesday before or the Sunday after Thanksgiving.”
