Flag returned to owners
Morgan Hill
A family memento apparently taken as a prank was returned to its owners Friday to their relief.
Don Holmes and his wife, Diane, were distressed last week over the loss of the U.S. flag presented to Don’s mother after it was draped over his father Sherman’s coffin in honor of his military service during World War II. The flag was stolen from a lighted flagpole in the front of the Holmes’ residence on Diana Avenue on Nov. 24.
Don said the flag was returned on Friday by a family who said the had found the flag on their doorstep on Nov. 24, but didn’t know who it belonged to. They apparently realized the flag might have some emotional significance and so did not discard it, Don said.
Then on Friday, they happened to drive by the Holmes house and saw the sign that Don had put by the flagpole, asking for the return of the flag.
Don said he does not want to pursue punishment for the thief, who he said is a teenager, he is just happy to have the keepsake back.
