New mothers in Morgan Hill will have the opportunity Wednesday to meet with other new moms at a brunch.

“New mothers can have a group and playmates for their children,” said Marby Lee, a member of Las Madres.

The brunch will be held at Guglielmo Winery from 10 a.m. to noon. It is organized by members of the 2002 club as a way to start up the 2003 members. The only requirement to join is that parents either have, or are expecting a baby this year.

“We welcome parents from all walks of life,” said Sandi Fairband, organizer of this year’s brunch.

Las Madres is an organization of new mothers. The intent is to provide a group that new moms can have contact with other moms in the area. Membership is based on the year of the child’s birth. They set up play groups and get together. New moms can have a group to meet with and have playmates for their children.

“It is good for children’s social interactions,” said Fairband.

Members meet together and organize different events for their children to get together. They could either have play dates, or organize different field trips. Moms can even get together and have a night out, without the children.

The organization started in 1953 in Palo Alto. It was founded by mothers as a way to get themselves out of the house. The name Las Madres was chosen as a way to reflect on the Hispanic history of California.

Las Madres came to Morgan Hill 25 years ago, and it is still going strong. According to Fairband, there are currently more than 200 members, with 73 in 2002 alone.

All new, and expecting mothers for 2003 are welcome. The Wednesday, July 16, brunch is free. Guglielmo Winery is located on East Main Avenue across from Live Oak High School. Details: 465-2203.
