The biggest blow to teachers will be at the elementary level, with 41 teachers of kindergarten through third grade getting the notices. Morgan Hill Unified School District officials expect to do away with the state’s class size reduction program, which costs about $1 million each year. The state provides about $500,000 for the voluntary program, but the district fronts the rest, according to Deputy Superintendent Bonnie Tognazzini.

Eight full-time teachers with the Regional Occupational Programs will receive pink slips. These programs provide students with skill training to prepare students for careers in everything from fashion to computers.

In addition, two special education teachers will receive pink slips, as will the elementary music teacher.

Although all employees will keep their jobs through the end of the current school year, the district has to notify employees that they may be laid off next year by March 13. Not every employee who receives a pink slip will necessarily be laid off, according to Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Jay Totter. However, the district tries to give as accurate a number of pink slips as possible rather than blanketing the district with them, he said.

Teachers who will be laid off will receive a final notice May 14.

Classified employees, or custodians, teacher aides and other Service Employees International Union members, will receive pink slips by April 29. For them, the pink slips serves as the final notice.
