Cajun food coming soon to Morgan Hill

“Red Phone, I wonder if this has been brought up before. Quite often there is a ‘manure’ smell that comes down Condit Road. Is it safe to breathe? It may be potentially hazardous. In addition the odoriferous facility is not helping to attract businesses and families to Morgan Hill. Word is getting around that Morgan Hill is not the place to move and raise a family. Has anything ever been done to move the facility?”

Red Phone: Dear It Stinks, this issue was brought up by a caller last summer. The odor you are referring to most likely comes from the South Valley Mushroom Farm on Diana Avenue.

While Red Phone agrees the smell can be a bit overwhelming at times, the odors are not dangerous, according to Chris Rummel with the Santa Clara County Environmental Health Department.

And, there are seven mushroom farms in South County, but just the Diana Avenue farm that is in the city limits, and it has been here for nearly 50 years. Red Phone believes living with the smell is preferable to living up north. But, your wishes may come true. The company has applied for a general plan amendment, perhaps making it easier to sell to a developer.

Longterm city plans now call for an auto dealership at that location. That would be a blow to local agriculture and another step toward Morgan Hill resembling one of the many Silicon Valley communities.

Say it ain’t so!

Crosswalks are being studied

“Just calling to let you know that the crosswalk on West Edmundson Avenue between Monterey Road and the Centennial Recreation Center is not safe. Even with the all the signs up, the cars don’t stop to let people across. If the police want to make some money, that is where they should be to ticket all the cars that don’t stop.”

Red Phone: Dear Ticket ‘Em, after the death of Rory Tomasello – who was riding his bike through that crosswalk when he was struck and killed late last year – the city agreed to study the half dozen or so mid-block crosswalks in the city in an effort to ensure safety.

According to Public Works Director Jim Ashcraft, that study should be done within two to three weeks.

“The purpose is to review all existing crossings for conformity to current safety standards and recommend any needed improvements,” he said.

Anyway, good caller, stay tuned for a story about the results of the study.
