There were no typical science fair vinegar and baking soda volcanoes at last Thursday’s Science Fair held at Britton Middle School. The second annual Pauchon Research Foundation’s science fair brought out the best student scientists in the area.

With four schools participating: Oakwood School, Sobrato High School, Martin Murphy and Britton Middle schools, the foundation gave out cash prizes to both high school and middle school categories determined by four judges: Brad Leach, Dave Conragan both of the Pauchon Board, Yvonne Duckett of the American Association of University Women ad Britton Middle School principal Glen Webb.

Winners were announced Jan. 26 at Britton’s auditorium where the public also got the opportunity to walk around and see student projects and demonstrations. There were studies on plant life, praying mantis’ and even a ‘hovercraft’ made with a leaf blower and plenty of creativity.

Second place middle school division winner Samanthan Sadoff also presented her project “The Wind is Blowing in a New Direction” to the Morgan Hill Unified School District school board meeting on Tuesday night. Her project tested two types of wing structures for wind turbines.

First place winners in the high school division received $250, 2nd place $200, 3rd $100 and 4th $50. For the middle school division: 1st place received $150, 2nd $120, 3rd $80 and 4th $50.
