Three Morgan Hill seniors will get one more shot at playing high school football when they join the south roster for the 43rd annual Wedemeyer Classic.
Live Oak’s Alex Cornejo and Zach Heffernan will join Isaiah Fernandez to try to make it three years in a row for the South to win the annual all star game.
The Wedemeyer Classic is named after football coach Charlie Wedemeyer with Los Gatos High School who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He died after living with the disease for more than 30 years in 2010.
The game originally was dubbed the Silicon Valley Youth Classic, but was renamed for Wedemeyer following his death.
The classic give players from around Santa Clara County a chance for one final hurrah before moving on to college.
The South will be coached by Leigh High School’s Kyle Padia
Cornejo and Heffernan were a one-two receiving combo for Live Oak, accumulating 1,320 of the team’s 2,542 receiving yards, catching 55 percent of the team’s receptions.
Cornejo was also a beast on defense, with five interceptions to lead the secondary in that category.
Heffernan also four sacks on defense with 61 total tackles.
Fernandez was a stellar receiver for Sobrato, pulling in better than one in five of the team’s receiving yards.
Through nine games played, he caught 25 passes for 417 yards and four touchdowns.
He also got some touches in the run game, going for 4.8 yards per carry.
The three from Morgan Hill will be among six from the South Valley with Eddie Vargas and Victor Sanchez from Gilroy and Noah Liberatore from Christopher.
Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Levis Stadium.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for ages 18 and under.
