All-Stars deal with heat in Brentwood and lose twice to get
eliminated from playoffs
Brentwood – After spending two days dealing with extreme heat conditions in Brentwood, the Morgan Hill Bronco All-Stars were eliminated from the Pony Baseball Regional playoffs held over the weekend.
The extreme heat felt throughout the Bay Area brought temperatures of well over 100 degrees to Brentwood and forced the rescheduling of games.
Matches that originally had afternoon start times were moved to the evening and early morning to escape the hottest parts of the day.
The heat on Saturday led to four emergency calls to the Brentwood Fire Department to treat players and spectators.
Morgan Hill, which beat tournament host Brentwood on Thursday 11-10, couldn’t keep its bats as hot as the weather and lost its second round game to Mountain View-Los Altos 12-1 on Saturday.
The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The loss dropped Morgan Hill to the elimination bracket, where it squared off against Roseville on Sunday.
With the game tied in the fifth inning, Roseville pounded out four runs to break the game open and take the win and knock Morgan Hill out of the tournament.
It was the second straight game that Morgan Hill was doomed by fifth-inning struggles – Mountain View-Los Altos scored eight runs in the fifth on Saturday including five after Morgan Hill had recorded two outs.
“Nobody expected us to go as far as we did,” said manager Tim Mason. “We used that as motivation.”
The team finished its post-season with a 4-4 record and a runner-up finish in the Sectional Championship held in Morgan Hill.
