The 28th year of competition for the Gilroy Garlic tennis
tournament wrapped up Monday, with 16 events in four levels of the
National Tennis Rating Programs taking place in the sanctioned
United States Tennis Association competition.
Gilroy – The 28th year of competition for the Gilroy Garlic tennis tournament wrapped up Monday, with 16 events in four levels of the National Tennis Rating Programs taking place in the sanctioned United States Tennis Association competition.
The Morgan Hill duo of Tony Bontempi and Albert Cabassa took first in the men’s 4.0 doubles event, beating Rikiya Hashimoto and Hirohito Kohno 6-4, 6-4.
Bontempi and Cabassa advanced to the finals by knocking off Gilroy’s Jeff Anderson and Morgan Hill’s Rob Christopher 6-2, 6-2.
Morgan Hill’s Jerry Marenghi advanced to the 4.5 men’s singles semifinals, before losing to San Jose’s Phil Yalkut 6-1, 6-1.
The 3.5 women’s doubles finals, which was played late Monday with the results not being available at press time, pitted a pair of local doubles teams.
Morgan Hill’s Paula Dennery and Gilroy’s Patricia Deckys beat Cathy Atwood and Loretta Stone 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals to advance to face Morgan Hill’s Eileen Obata and Gilroy’s Katherine Cabassa, who beat Carol Marques and Jami Reynolds 6-2, 6-1 in their semifinal match.
In other tournament play, Tung Do and Tuan Nguyen beat San Martin’s Krishna Bhola and Morgan Hill’s Gary Melching 6-4, 6-3 in the men’s 3.5 doubles finals.
Gilroy’s Jami Reynolds took home the women’s 3.5 singles title by beating Jamie Daniels of San Francisco 6-3, 6-1.
In 3.5 men’s singles play, Lei Xue of Sunnyvale earned the title with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Gilroy’s Robert Marques, who also advanced to the 3.5 mixed doubles finals with his mother Carol Marques, where they lost to Yimie Peng and Xue, 7-5, 6-3.
A pair of Gilroy teams took home the titles in both 4.5 doubles events. In the men’s competition, Ray Blagof and Marcus Hughes beat another Gilroy team of Kenneth Marques and David Okada. In the mixed competition, Hughes took home another title by combining with Mary Jenney to beat Dung Nguyen and John Pham 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 in the finals.
The tournament, which drew 182 entries, was held at three separate venues this year – Gilroy High, Gavilan College and Las Animas Veterans Park.
