The Morgan Hill United Methodist Church is in need of some help. The roof of the 132-year old church was replaced in 2023, but now it needs exterior paint and lead remediation, which can be costly. According to volunteers, they have a lot of the funds, but are in need of additional money.

The church, known in 1893 as the Morgan Hill Methodist Episcopal Church, was the first church in the new town. During that first year, the building located on Monterey Road in downtown, was shared by a group of Baptists and also served as a public school.

Two years later, a parsonage was built and the bell that sits atop the church today was purchased by the Ladies Aid for $85. The social hall was built in 1903, the pipe organ was placed in the church in 1918, and eventually the west end and classrooms were completed in the mid-1930s.

During the ‘30s, Monterey Road was widened and the church was moved back 17 feet.

Speaking of Monterey Road, we all see people speeding between Gilroy and Morgan Hill and more than a dozen motorists will pay the price—one of whom will pay twice!

The Gilroy Police Department, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department, the California Highway Patrol – Hollister/Gilroy Office, and the Morgan Hill Police Department recently conducted a special enforcement.

Morgan Hill officers issued 12 citations for speeding, one for a red light violation and one for cell phone use.

GPD cited 15 people, including one motorist twice on Monterey Road. Once for going 81 mph and then again going 69 mph. The speed limit is 50 mph.

“Speeding isn’t worth it,” said a GPD social media post. “Not only does it cost you an arm and a leg figuratively speaking, it could also cost you an arm and a leg literally.”
