Even though the Crimson Crusader stays pretty busy during the week, he still looks forward to hearing from our callers and helping them overcome the forces of evil. If you have a concern that you wish to voice, please call the Red Phone at 779-4106, ext. 206. Leave a name and phone number so we’ll know who we’re helping.

More Poppy Jasper Talk

“Recently, we had discovered a great local collection of Poppy Jasper. The “Little House of Poppy Jasper” on Hill Road has a wonderful collection in various forms, rough, slabs, tumbled and interesting jewelry. You’ll love the charm and wit of Gino and Sharon who have decided to share their collection. After stopping by, try some of the famous El Toro Poppy Jasper (the beer) located in the brewery right behind the store. Have fun and enjoy, it’s a great place!”

RED PHONE:

The Crimson Crusader is happy to see that the Red Phone column is being read, especially the question and answer concerning our city’s official stone, poppy jasper. If I can break away from my desk soon, I just might pay a visit to this place you obliviously enjoy so much.

WHAT’S THE WALKWAY FOR?

“I am calling about the new park walkway that has been put in near Valley Pines on East Main Avenue. First, what is the meaning of the walkway – why is it here? Also, who is responsible for the maintenance of the walkway?”

RED PHONE:

This “open space easement,” as it is officially referred to by the Morgan Hill Planning Office, is part of the Central Avenue – Morgan Lane housing development by Warmington Homes. It is one of six open space areas that will be incorporated into the 83-house tract, and gives the home buyers some park-like settings to be shared as common areas. The area described by our caller will allow pedestrian traffic from east Main Avenue to Calle Siena. The Morgan Lane Homeowners’ Association is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of these areas.

UPSET WITH DISTRICT

“I am concerned that the Morgan Hill Unified School District is making important decisions without the involvement of parents of school-age children, such as putting sixth-grade students in middle school. These decisions are being made while many families are on vacation and cannot voice their opinions. I believe decisions such as this should wait till the fall so parents can have their say.

“Also, why has it been decided to start school in mid-August this year? I would like an answer from both the president of the Morgan Hill School Teachers Union as well as the Morgan Hill Unified School District.”

RED PHONE:

The Crimson Crusader contacted the office of Dr. Alan Nishino, superintendent of the Morgan Hill Unified School District. Through his executive secretary, Julie Zintsmaster, Nishino answered our caller’s questions.

“The student calendar is negotiated with the teachers’ union. One of the

main reasons that students will start one week earlier this year is so that

students can finish with their final exams for first semester prior to the

holiday break in December. We believe this is better for students.”

Regarding moving sixth-graders to middle school, Nishino responded,

“A change to the district’s grade level configuration is a topic that would require board discussion and action. There has been no presentation or discussion at the board level regarding changing the district’s present grade configuration. Such a change, however, is not ruled out for the future. Before such a change would take place, there would be district-wide discussions, which would include parental input.”
