The next step in Morgan Hill’s downtown revitalization efforts will begin Wednesday night, as the city council will consider soliciting bids for new Monterey Road streetscape designs.
City staff recommended submitting a request for proposals for different redesign options for Monterey Road through downtown. Such a request would include an alternative to transform the street into a two-lane road, or maintain the current four-lane route but aesthetic and structural improvements.
The project will also eventually include similar transformation of downtown side streets in order to fulfill the Downtown Specific Plan, which the council adopted in November 2009. Part of that plan, the Third Street Promenade, was completed earlier this month.
Up to $250,000 in grant funds from state and regional transportation agencies could be available for the project, according to the staff report. The city’s Redevelopment Agency would likely be required to match any grant funds.
The staff report does not indicate an estimated total cost for the project.
The redesign will include opportunity for public participation which could begin by July. Staff expect to submit completed design recommendations to the council by March 2011.
The city council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall’s council chambers, 17555 Peak Ave.
