Making the transition to wood bats for the tournament, the Morgan Hill Mudcats semipro baseball team’s offense came up short in its AABC Stan Musial NorCal Regional opener on Friday.

Mustering just two hits and a single run, the Mudcats (who usually use aluminum bats) dropped a 2-1 decision to the Sacramento Scorch at Baylands Park in Palo Alto.

According to Mudcats manager Ken Valencia, starting pitcher Matt Brotherton pitched a fine game after surrendering a pair of runs in the first inning. Valencia said Live Oak High grad Dylan Regan also pitched well in relief.

MH managed its lone run of the game in the sixth inning when James Molina doubled and scored on Matt Morgan’s RBI single.

The Mudcats were scheduled to play a loser’s bracket game later Friday afternoon, but results were not available.
