Morgan Hill – A group of dedicated students, Girl Scouts, Kiwanians and educators volunteered their Friday afternoon to pile thousands of pounds of food into boxes for hungry Morgan Hill families. About 150 families were given the food boxes Saturday morning thanks to the donations collected by every school in Morgan Hill Unified.

Even 4-year-old Aida Martins could carry one can at a time to help.

“I put the food into the places they go,” she said.

Kiwanis member Janey Muirhead spent her 10th year at PA Walsh loading cans and boxes of food into the care packages, that also included potatoes, onions and other heartier choices donated by Second Harvest Food Bank.

“It has to be done. It just has to be done,” Muirhead said while helping Aida navigate the rows of lunch tables in Walsh’s cafeteria.

Directing the project for about 28 years is Kiwanis member Anthony Goularte has been the booming voice at Walsh around this time every year. He’s been shepherding the effort along with Patty Aglony, the leader of the migrant program at Central High School. Though after helping, Central’s Principal Irene Macias-Morris “she said this is her baby now,” Algony said.

Mayor Steve Tate and his wife Jennifer spent part of their 44th wedding anniversary carrying cans around the cafeteria among the other 45 or more volunteers.

“I like helping other people. If I can help other people have a better holiday, that’s great,” Goularte said. He’s stepping down as the leader of the pack, but he said knows someone will step up and take on the project.

Food that was leftover from Saturday was donated to St. Catherine’s ReachOut food bank.
