Morgan Hill’s newest doctor has settled in and now sees her business growing.

Dr. Nimisha Shah moved to Morgan Hill in May from Kentucky. In June she opened for business in the DePaul Health Center, former site of the Saint Louise Regional Hospital, off of Cochrane Road, seeing patients 15 and older.

“This has been better than I had expected,” Shah said.

The adjustment to Morgan Hill has been an easy one for Shah, who came from a Richmond, Ky., which Shah said is the same-sized town as Morgan Hill.

Shah had a private practice in Richmond and is board certified in internal medicine. She completed her residency at New York Medical College where she also had extra training in rheumatology.

Her husband, Dr. Devang Shah, also is a board certified internal medicine physician. He will be joining her in the office once the practice becomes successful enough to support both doctors.

Until the business has taken off, Shah’s husband will work in San Jose.

They have two boys, ages 10 and 6. Both will attend Oakwood Country School.

Shah said her boys have made the adjustment to the new city well. The boys have taken an interest in soccer as well as the new Aquatics Center. They have participated in swim programs there and Shah said they are loving it.

“They still want to be there after five hours in the water,” she said.

After the former Saint Louise Hospital closed in 1999, the City Council, determined to bring services back, set up the Morgan Hill Community Health Foundation to study what the area’s actual needs are and how best to fill them.

Working, first with SLRH staff, and more recently with O’Connor Hospital administrators – both are part of the Daughters of Charity Hospital System – foundation members formed a team to recruit physicians, laboratories and other health-related services. Plans to offer laboratory, radiology and physical therapy services beginning this spring are under way.

Shah’s new practice is one sign that the foundation’s strategy is working.

Recently O’Connor/SLRH renamed the old medical office building on Cochrane Road, calling it the DePaul Health Center.
