The Morgan Hill and Andrew Hill Pop Warner teams squared off In In a battle of the young Raiders this weekend
The Morgan Hill Raiders wore there away whites. The offense struggled, while the defense keep the team in the game all day dominating the second half until giving up a touchdown late on a broken 65-yard play.
Morgan Hill won the toss and and took the ball but went three and out. Andrew Hill returned the punt to the Raiders 25-yard line.
The front four of Andrew Knight, Mitch Crowley, Clayton Howard and Hunter Sutton came up big, shutting down the inside running game all day.
With the inside game shut down, Hill explored the outside attack with sweeps, but nice defensive coverage by Blake Birnie and Jerardo Caro contained that approach.
Morgan Hill battled back on the legs of Dominic Bejarano and Derrick Taylor with sweeps of there own. Bejarano scored on a 15-yard keeper around right end.
The defense lead by Birine, Austin Vaiana, Jerry Jacob, Luis Jimenez, Anthony Villarreal and Matthew Dariano consistently pushed the Hill offense deep into their own territory.
Hard hitting Taylor Turnispeed was solid throughout the second half solitifying,g the team defense.
Following the kickoff ,Morgan Hill drove deep into Hill country. Frankie Palmer made several key runs, one to convert a 4th-and-4.
Time was running out as a determined group of Austin Tobia, Tyler Tobia, Nathanial Batad and Joey Chapa gave Palmer enough run the reach the end zone for an apparent touchdown. The play was called back on a holding call.
On a side note, one of the Andrew Hill coaches was ejected from the game for unsportsman like conduct.
Jr. Pee Wee Division
The Junior Pee Wee (Silver) Raiders won a come from behind victory over Andrew Hill 18-13 over Andrew Hill. The Raiders were trailing at half time 7-0 before mounting a furious comeback in the third quarter.
Leading the way offensively for the Raiders were tailbacks Ricky Clift and Kyle Lappano. Clift rushed for 89 yards on 10 carries, including a 30-yard touchdown run.
Lappano gained 72 yards on 7 carries, with touchdown runs of 40 and 10 yards away. Quarterbacks Brian Celestino and Rhett Ramirez also added 35 and 16 yards rushing each. Fullback Darryn Diaz gained 15 yards, and Dylan Glines added three yards to the team’s efforts.
The Morgan Hill Raiders defense was led by strong safety Rhett Ramirez, who made 12 tackles.
Linebackers Jon Molina and Jacob Martin each had seven tackles. Martin also recovered a fumble.
Defensive Tackle Taylor Ricketts had a big day with seven tackles and forced a fumble. Tackle Danny Galli made six stops.
Linebacker Brett Jackson had five tackles and one big key block on an interception return.
Kyle Lappano and Dylan Glines had four tackles apiece. Glines also batted down two passes. Ryan Clare chipped in with three tackles. And Justin Hill and Ricky Clift each made two stops.
Free safety Alec Mainland made five stops, knocked down one pass and intercepted a pass.
And Brian Celestino had five tackles and intercepted two passes, including one return of 80 yards to change the tide of the game in the third quarter.
The Morgan Hill defense did not allow a goal for the second week in a row.
Andrew Hill scored on a punt return in the second quarter and added a score on the last play of the game on a strip/fumble return.
