Following are the results:
Pride 10U Gold
The final tournament of the season in Livermore had a great opening day for the Pride 10U Gold. The Pride showed tremendous improvement over the season and credit must be given to both the hard work of the team and the talent and dedication of their coaches Greg Smolka and Fred Cisneroz.
PRIDE 8, SJ Quicksilver 2
Heather Johnson singled to right field to open the Pride’s offensive attack. Jess Post and Kayla Cisneroz walked and Diana Lopez and Maite Ourricariet both singled to make the score 2-0 in the first inning. The Quicksilver came back with two of their own in the bottom of the first, but a nice play on a line drive to Ourricariet in left field and two back-to-back strikeouts by Katie Machado brought their rally to a quick end. In the second inning, Anisha Patel singled down the third base line, stole two bases and scored on an RBI single by Jess Post. In the top of the fifth inning, Jess Post and Kayla Cisneroz both walked, and Katie Machado singled on a bunt down the third-base line. Smolka walked and Ourricariet had a single to center field and two RBIs. After a double steal, Katie Obbema walked, Amanda Morgan walked and Heather Johnson singled to second to make the score 8-2 Pride.
Oakdale Vly Magic 5, PRIDE 4
This game was a heartbreaker as the Pride led from the second inning on, only to lose in the final inning. With the score 1-0 Magic, the Pride had walks from Erin Smolka, Maite Ourricariet and Heather Johnson and a bunt single from Anisha Patel to take over the lead. In the bottom of the second inning, Katie Machado struck out all three Magic batters. The Pride made the score 4-3 with a number of walks in the fourth inning and held the lead into the final inning. Katie Machado struck out the first batter, but four straight defensive errors and a single to left allowed the Magic to sneak back in the game and take the win.
PRIDE 9, San Lorenzo Jinx 4
With the score 2-0 Jinx, the Pride quickly fought back with a walk to Heather Johnson who stole second and took third on a fielders’ choice by Jess Post, and an RBI bunt by Kayla Cisneroz that scored Johnson. The second inning started with a nice bunt down the third base line for Erin Smolka, followed by walks to Maite Ourricariet and Katie Obbema, and a bases-loaded two-run single by Heather Johnson. With the score 4-3 Jinx, the Pride had just one last chance, and took full advantage of the opportunity. Diana Lopez singled, Cisneroz and Machado walked to load the bases and Anisha Patel continued her strong hitting with an RBI single to shortstop. Katie Mains and Jenny Obbema both walked, and Katie Obbema smacked a single right down the third-base line to score another run. Jessica Post then doubled to score two more runs and put the Pride ahead 9-4. Heather Johnson then struck out two batters to get her first complete game victory of the season.
PRIDE 13, San Lorenzo Lady Patriots 1
The first inning set the tone for this game as the Pride quickly shut down the Patriots with a great catch by Jenny Obbema running in from right field to snag a ball on a hop and quickly throw to Diana Lopez at first for the force. The Pride quickly took the lead in their half of the first when Heather Johnson and Jess Post both singled and Lopez doubled to bring in the first run. Maite Ourricariet hit a bouncer to second that scored another run and Katie Machado had a single down the third base line to make the score 4-0 Pride. Erin Smolka and Jenny Obbema both walked to load the bases and Amanda Morgan singled to left center scoring another two runs. In the bottom of the second, the Pride continued to put on a hitting clinic. Post singled, Lopez walked and Kayla Cisneroz tripled over the head of the center fielder to clear the bases. After a number of walks the bases were once again loaded for Johnson, who singled to right field and added two more RBIs to her growing total for the tournament. Katie Machado pitched a two-hitter, the defense was spectacular and the hitting for the Pride was probably the best of the season. The game was called early due to the 10-run “mercy” rule.
Oakdale Vly Magic 6, PRIDE 4
The first inning saw the lone hit for the Pride as Anisha Patel had a bunt single down the third-base line. The Pride had a number of walks that followed and scored three runs, but the bats that were so prolific suddenly became silent and the Pride struggled once Oakdale changed pitchers.
Consolation Championship:
SJ Quicksilver 11, PRIDE 9
Although the Pride had already beaten the Quicksilver the previous day, the first inning pretty much put it out of reach for the Pride as the Quicksilver scored 10 runs in the first inning. The Pride showed their true colors fighting back each inning and cutting the lead to 11-6 going into the final inning. The Pride knew it was their last chance and Patel quickly started with a single to shortstop. Katie Mains and Taylor Pencer both walked to load the bases and Jessica Post singled to right-center, scoring all three runners. With the score now 11-9, the Quicksilver was definitely worried, but two strikeouts and a pop-up ended the inning and a wonderful tournament for the Pride. The Pride placed fourth overall and Heather Johnson was voted Pride MVP by the opposing coaches. In addition, Taylor Pencer of the Pride won the tournament’s home-run hitting contest with a shot of 177 feet.
MH Pride 10U Green
After a string of wins this summer, the Pride 10U Green team ended its season with a third-place finish at the 2004 Strawberry Softball Jam.
SLV Mtn Dream 1, PRIDE 1
It was a defensive battle from the first inning as Pride pitcher Alyssa Santoya, backed by strong defensive play by shortstop Jennae Cambra and first baseman Allison Stoner, held the Dream to just one run. The Pride offense battled back and answered with a run of its own when Stoner walked and stole second. Brianna Anglikowski stepped to the plate, smashing a RBI single to right field. With the game tied at 1-1, it became a pitchers duel. Lisa Woodson came in for the Pride in the third inning, striking out the side, and continued to dominate the Dream offense striking out 11 of the 12 batters she faced.
PRIDE 10, SJ Quicksilver 1
It was a sign of what was to come when Lisa Woodson stepped to the plate in the top of the first inning and hit a towering two-run home run over the right field fence. The offensive attack continued in the second when Kirsten Doting led off the second inning with a line shot down the rightfield line followed by a single by Alyssa Santoya. Annika Camacho and Amanda Valdez battled the pitcher and drew walks, setting the stage for Jennae Cambra to knock in two runs with a shot up the middle. Priscilla Orona added an RBI to make it a 5-run inning. The Pride offense added three more runs in the fourth with a single by Orona and a two-run RBI blast by Woodson, who knocked in Cambra and Alexis Bejarano. Woodson retired the Quicksilver in the fourth, striking out the side and adding to a total of 11 strikeouts for the game.
Semifinals:
PVly Tremblers 5, PRIDE 0
Defensively, the Morgan Hill Pride team came out strong. Early in the first inning, the Tremblers hit a ball deep into left center that could have gone for extra bases but centerfielder Brianna Anglikowski snagged it to shut the Trembler offense down. Pitcher Lisa Woodson closed out the inning with two strikeouts. In the second inning, Allison Stoner walked and Kirsten Doting beat out an infield single with her blazing speed. Alyssa Santoya moved both runners into scoring position but were unable to capitalize on it as the Tremblers held the Pride. In the fourth inning, Woodson led off with a drive to right center but the Tremblers held tough.
