A postseason berth was within reach going into the final week of play, but the Morgan Hill Palomino Athletics came up just short.
After splitting their final four games, a pair of doubleheaders last week, the MH A’s missed securing a berth in the Palomino Regional Tournament by a hair, according to Manager Roy Jackson.
In its final week of play, the A’s (9-11 overall) dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the league champion Santa Clara Red Sox, then swept a twinbill from San Mateo.
But it wasn’t enough.
Jackson said spotty attendance by some of the team’s top players contributed to a sub-par season.
“Like I told the guys before the season, it’s okay if we don’t make the playoffs — I’m out here to make sure you have fun,” Jackson said. “But if you want to make the playoffs you have to show up. We (didn’t) come close to forfeiting a game … We had plenty of guys but when you’re missing the top of your lineup it’s tough.
“Hopefully, this will be a lesson tgo the guys. The good news is we have 11 of 16 players coming back next year.”
Jackson said several players stood out this season, including pitchers Greg Zarubi and Dave Masinter, and Live Oak High standouts Doug Porras, Dave Newton, Andrew Cummins, and Bryce Wilson.
