The Makos Senior Group completed in the Gilroy Gators Distance Meet last weekend, setting several personal bests.
The Makos entered 12 swimmers in 38 races, recording 30 best times, three new Junior Olympic qualifying times, one new Far Western Championship qualifying time, which was also a Pacific Swimming reportable time.
Connor Dobbs set a new team record in the 500 yard freestyle and lowered his own two-week-old record in this event by about 10 seconds.
Missy Miller broke the 20 minute barrier in the 1650 for the first time, set an “A” time, and broke Ingrid Ofverberg’s mark set in ’93 with a 19:27.96, more than a half minute under her previous personal best.
Estelle Richardson, swimming with Missy in the first heat of the first event Friday afternoon, locked into a battle for first in the 1650, caught up to the leader at 800 yards, taking the win.
In the win, Richardson smashed her old personal best by more than 50 seconds with an 18:23.79. She also established a new Far Western time, broke Brook Wells’ ’97 team mark and set her first PRT in the process.
Pacific Reportable Times are used at the end of the year to establish Pacific Swimming’s top 10 times lists in each age group.
Richardson’s time currently has her ranked toward the top of the list.
The Makos also established four new “B” times, eight new “BB” times, three new “A” times and two new “AA” times.
Macy Kerr got her first “A” and Junior Olympic time on the same swim, breaking the 3-minute mark in the 200 Breaststroke with a 2:56.88.
Rachel Cretcher lowered her Junior Olympic qualifying time in the 200 breast to snag a new ‘A’ time.
Derek Bowman, Gabi Cinkova, Kooper Knutson and Warren Richardson all recorded personal bests in all their events.
Most swims were personal bests. Distance meets offer the longer, tougher events, and Makos swimmers finished strong and raced well. Currently, the team has five swimmers qualified for the Junior Olympics, two qualified for the prestigious Far Westerns in March and several Senior Swimmers who are starting to look at qualifying standards for the Sectionals Championship.
