Mayor Steve Tate has kicked off Morgan Hill’s election season with his announced intention to run for a third term as the city’s leader come November.
“I am proud of the leadership role I’ve had as Mayor the past three years and look forward to the opportunity to continue that role beyond 2010,” Tate said.
But so far, Tate’s the only one looking forward.
While longtime Councilman Greg Sellers has said he will not run again for the position, no one – not even Councilwoman Marby Lee, whose first term ends this year – has said they will run for either a council seat or against Tate.
There will be two open council seats, Lee’s and Sellers’ along with the biannual mayor race.
“For me, it’s sort of that, am I going to run again? If it’s a yes, what am I going to run for, for council again or do I run for mayor? Frankly, it hasn’t gotten to that point yet,” Lee said. She listed health concerns, her jewelry business and time as factors weighing her decision.
First-term Morgan Hill Unified School District Board of Education Trustee Bart Fisher squelched rumors that he’ll run for city council.
“I think there are challenges aplenty in the Morgan Hill school district,” he said. “I’m very happy to be working with Dr. Smith. For an elected office, I think this is a good one for me.”
Fisher will run again, then, while Trustee Don Moody has said he won’t. Neither will Trustee Shelle Thomas, who has served three four-year terms.
Columnist Mario Banuelos said he thought seriously whether he’ll run for either the Board of Education or City Council.
“There are rumors going around, but I didn’t start them,” Banuelos said. “I’m flattered that people have confidence in me, but I don’t know, I haven’t really started considering it.”
Poppy’s Fish, Poultry and More owner Michael Castelan would not confirm nor deny the rumor being widely circulated that he will run for city council.
“Whoever runs, I hope it’s a good thing,” he said.
