Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate will deliver his third State of the City address Monday.
Tate, who took on a second two-year term as mayor in December after an uncontested race in November, said this year’s speech will be formatted much like last year’s, but with much different content.
Between last year’s speech and this year’s, the city has been gripped with a $2.2 million annual shortfall and laid off workers for the first time in almost two decades.
In reaching their 2008 goals for boosting downtown development and enhancing police safety, the council put two measures on the November ballot. Measure H would have created denser downtown housing, thus making the city’s downtown vision for mixed-use projects attainable. Measure G would have enacted a 2 percent utility users’ tax to pay for nine new police department positions, including seven officers. Measure H lost by just 10 votes and Measure G failed miserably, with almost two-thirds of voters rejecting it.
This year’s goals include economic development, downtown redevelopment, maintaining a sustainable budget and improving city governance.
Tate will broach each of these subjects during his speech at 7 p.m. in the El Toro Room at the Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.
