As chairwoman of the 15th annual Patriotic Sing, I would like to take this opportunity to invite members of our community, families and friends to this year’s program at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, at the Britton Middle School gymnasium. The event, which is free to the public, will feature two slide presentations, essay contest awards and a chance to celebrate the birthday of America through music. We will feature Catherine Connor and Michele Upton as our guest soloists. Please join us and rekindle your patriotism.
This year, we will once again be honoring the men and women of our Armed Forces. Recently, I received a phone call from a mother in Alameda whose son is serving in Iraq. Because she has attended the Patriotic Sing for several years, she asked if I would display a picture of her son at the program. And so, our “Wall of Heroes” was born. This year we will have pictures around the gym of men and women who are serving in the armed forces. If people would like to bring a poster board or picture of an Armed Forces member to the Britton Gym on Keystone Avenue, the gym will be open from 6-9 tonight and again from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday. We will pay tribute to the courage of our local heroes in song and in pictures. (Please put your name and phone number or e-mail address on the back of the picture or poster so we can return them promptly.)
The Patriotic Sing is the first of several events brought to our community by the volunteers of Independence Day, Inc. Following the Sing on Saturday evening, you are invited to dance in the streets of downtown Morgan Hill to the music of the “Usual Suspects.” On Sunday, July 4, 5K runners and walkers will begin their races at 8 a.m. Registration begins at 6:45 a.m. at P.A. Walsh School on West Main. At 11:30 a.m., plan to watch Morgan Hill’s Fourth of July Parade, “A Salute to America.”
After the parade, travel to Community Park where the Family Festival will feature food, entertainment and fun for young and old. Be sure to catch the music of the Dadz before the fireworks. After dark, at Community Park, a dramatic fireworks whow will conclude the festivities of the Fourth.
All in all, some memory-making ways to celebrate a small-town Fourth of July in Morgan Hill. Check out www.mhidi.com for more details. Thank you, IDI, and happy birthday America.
