Morgan Hill – The Morgan Hill Swim Club successfully hosted its third Coast Valley Aquatic League (CVAL) Tri-Meet with Santa Cruz County Aquatics (SCCA) and Slug Aquatics (SLUG) at the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center June 30.

Fifty four Morgan Hill Makos won events on the way to wins over SCCA and SLUG, marking the first such double win for the Makos this summer or last.

With a 3-3 record so far, the Makos are in the middle of the pack, up significantly from last season.

The June 30 performance was a well represented team effort, with age-group swimmers clearly leading the way, strong relay performances from younger swimmers, and a lot of great races at every age level.

Out in front for the Makos with double and triple event wins or “sweeps” were Derek Bowman, Christiana Bridges, Tanner Fry, Victoria Martini, Gabrielle Smith, Lauren Akin, Trent Itow, Andrew Kim, Daniel Pawlak, Estelle Richardson, Savanah Trewman, and Prashan Welipiliya.

Morgan Hill was also well represented in both the freestyle and medley relays with first place finishes by the 13-14 year-old boys and by the 11-12 year-old girls.

The 9-10 year old girls continued the winning streak for the team with first place finishes in both the free and medley relays, and the 9-10 year-old boys finished first in the free relay.

The 8-under swimmers completed the relay sweep with first place finishes by both the boys and girls relay teams in the free and medley relays.

The season is going by fast for the Mako swim team with only a month to prepare for the CVAL championships held again this year at the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center.

Next up for the Makos is a last- ditch qualifying effort for the big meets at Sunnyvale on Friday, followed by the Junior Olympics, and the Far Western Championships.

The Makos have qualified swimmers ages 11 through 15 for those meets.

Several Mako senior group members have been working very hard for the upcoming championship stretch swimming up to 70,000 yards in one week’s practice for the distance group.

“That’s almost 40 miles a week,” Mako’s coach Mark Scott said. “We’re looking for the swimmers to be pretty tough in the championships.”
