Live Oak High standout Brandon Powell got his revenge on Saturday.

After finishing second to Tri-County Athletic League rival LJ Lumpkin of Palma in the 110 high hurdles during a dual meet earlier this month, Powell roared past Lumpkin to take first in the event at the 31-team Kearney Invitational at Hartnell College in Salinas last weekend.

Powell (15.41) edged Lumpkin (15.47) at the tape with Hollister-San Benito’s Siljef Tabancay finishing third as the TCAL dominated the event.

Powell and Lumpkin have been going at it for a few years now in a rivalry that includes several big showdowns between the two talented athletes.

An upset victory by Powell in last year’s TCAL finals in the event was followed by Lumpkin edging the Acorn speedster in the Central Coast Section 110 hurdles finals, a victory that allowed the Chieftain to advance to the state finals.

Meanwhile, other top performances for LO included:

n Cobbie Jones took second in the 1,600 in 2:14.62, trailing Hollister-SB’s Amanda Boyd by about a second in a continuing drama between the pair.

n Tanya Tenorio finished second in the discus (111-6) and third in the shot put (33-5).

n And, Jesus Atanacio turned in a personal record 2:04.50 in the 800, finishing eighth overall.
