Looking to the Future

Greetings and salutations! My name is Paul Doherty and I am incredibly excited to be the new sports editor of the Morgan Hill Times.

My journalism background ranges from sports to opinion writing, although features are my forte.

I received my bachelor’s degree in journalism (news-editing) from California State University, Chico in 2005, and I have written for small to mid-sized newspapers for the last two years.

In college, I wrote feature stories for The Orion, the student newspaper in Chico and also Ka Leo O Hawaii (The Voice of Hawaii) in Honolulu.

I also covered prep sports in Hayward as a correspondent for The Daily Review. Working as a correspondent for the Review is when I began to foster a love for sports writing. After being down on the sidelines covering football games, I knew that I had found my niche.

Growing up in the East Bay I played Little League baseball, CYO basketball, and I was an avid skateboarder.

In high school, I played three years of varsity basketball, earning MVP my senior year, and two years of varsity football, earning all-league and All-East Bay honors my senior year.

In college I was also on two championship intramural basketball teams and played rugby until a shoulder injury had me permanently sidelined.

I can vividly remember how incredible it was to be interviewed by a reporter after a win or a big game, and then to see my name and quotes in the paper the next morning.

Now, as the sports editor, it is my turn to provide the community with the best possible sports coverage, and the local athletes with those feelings of achievement and importance that I felt as a student-athlete.

I am looking forward to establishing relationships with the people of Morgan Hill in order to develop in-depth feature articles about this vibrant sports community,

I have named this column Sports Buzz and my aim is to provide an ongoing commentary on the happenings and most note-worthy people and sporting events in Morgan Hill.

I expect to be exceptionally busy for the first few weeks while getting acquainted with all the new names, faces, and places in the area, but I am looking forward to the challenges this position offers.

Coming on as sports editor at the end of the high school season will give me much time and many opportunities to become familiar with the community, and it is my hope that the Sports Buzz will shine a spotlight on the note-worthy, and create a buzz within the community.
