After a discouraging loss in its season-opener two weeks ago, followed by two ties, the Live Oak High girls soccer team was spoiling for a victory.

And, the Acorns got it in the Palo Alto Tournament last week, a 3-0 win over Valley Christian, the same team that beat them two weeks ago.

“We finally got it going,” Acorn coach Tony Vasquez said. “The girls played really well.”

Live Oak (1-1-2 overall) got a goal from Shawna McKeown, and two more from Michele McDonald. Ginelle Bongiono and Allison Muttz each had an assist.

It was sweet revenge for the Acorns, who were shut out by Valley Christian 2-0 two days before Thanksgiving.

Vasquez said the difference between the two games was striking.

“We struggled in that first game,” he said. “We have a bunch of new girls on the team. It was a good first game to get out of our system.”

Live Oak also had two ties in the Palo Alto Tournament, 0-0 against Santa Teresa and 2-2 against Gunn.

In the Gunn game, Acorn goalie Andrea Riolo scored a rare goal when Vasquez brought her out of the net with just seconds left in the first half and she knocked in a pass from Janae Pimental.

Pimental added a second-half goal against Gunn for Live Oak.

The Acorn girls are scheduled to host a very good Presentation team on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Live Oak boys improved their record to 3-2 overall with a 5-1 rout of Pioneer at the Homestead Cup on Saturday.

The Acorn boys were scheduled to play at Wilcox on Monday and will play host Homestead in the Homestead Cup on Saturday.
