Four teachers in the Morgan Hill Unified School District were
recipients of the prestigious Dorothy Wright Outstanding Teaching
Award on Thursday evening at San Jose State University. The award
was established in 1987 as a memorial to a former member of the San
Jose State University Department of English who distinguished
herself for her commitment to teacher education.
MORGAN HILL – Four teachers in the Morgan Hill Unified School District were recipients of the prestigious Dorothy Wright Outstanding Teaching Award on Thursday evening at San Jose State University. The award was established in 1987 as a memorial to a former member of the San Jose State University Department of English who distinguished herself for her commitment to teacher education. The award recognizes teachers for their hard work and dedication to helping students prepare for academic success in college. This years local award winners include Sybil Smit, Nina Audino, Bonnie Ireland from Ann Sobrato High School; and five time award recipient Paula Haaser from Live Oak High School.
Recipients of the Dorothy Wright award are nominated by former students at San Jose State. To identify worthy candidates, the English Department circulates questionnaires in its freshman courses, asking students to identify those teachers who best prepared them for their college writing courses. Hundreds of the questionnaires are collected and tabulated; then the award recipients are honored in a campus ceremony–usually in early May–attended by the English Department faculty, students, and other members of the university community.
