Scouts earn Eagle rank

Morgan Hill Scout Troop 799/2799 members Hayden Taylor, Elizabeth Rodriges and Anastasia Truong recently achieved their Eagle Scout rank. Eagle is the highest rank in scouting, and its recipients devote considerable time and effort into attaining the achievement.

“This mulit-year journey to the rank of Eagle Scout is one of the most involved and transformative experiences a young person can experience,” said Mark Foggiato, Troop 799/2799 Eagle Scout Court of Honor Chair. “They try new things through the merit badge program, develop confidence in the outdoors (and) practice leadership skills while completing a service project that benefits the community.”

“We are incredibly proud of Hayden, Elizabeth and Anastasia on achieving the highest rank in the Scouting program and wish them all the best in their future endeavors!” Foggiato added.

Essay winners write about kindness

BookSmart Community Advantage (BCA) this week announced the winners of its 6th annual Gift of Reading Essay Contest, celebrating the theme of kindness. Each year, BCA launches the Gift of Reading program with a writing contest, inviting young students to reflect on meaningful topics, says a press release from BCA.

This year, students responded to the prompt: “Kindness is like a gift we can give to others every day. Think about a time when someone was kind to you, or when you showed kindness to someone else. Write about what happened, how it made you feel, and why you think kindness is important.”

Winners in each age group and grade level are:

• Second grade: Liliana Rodriguez, El Toro Health Science Academy, first place; Violeta Lemmon Soria, Jackson Academy of Math and Music, honorable mention.

• Third through fifth grade: Savanna Zara Sidhu, Oakwood School, first place; Dominic Serrano, homeschool, honorable mention.

• Middle school: Kaylee Santangelo, homeschool, first place.

In addition to gift cards from BookSmart, essay winners will receive a special gift pack from One Act, an organization created to build more kindness, connection and care throughout the world and to allow everyone to know and feel that they matter and belong and are loved, simply because they exist, says the press release.
