Upon the recommendation of members of the City Council, Mayor Dennis Kennedy announced appointments to fill vacancies in several of the city’s board and commissions during the July 27 council meeting.
The recommendations were made during their July 20 meeting by all council members, except Mark Grzan, who was not present at the meeting.
Architect Jim Fruit, landscape architect Jerry Pyle and general contractor Rod Martin, all incumbents in the Architectural & Site Board (ARB), each agreed to serve another two years. Their appointments were approved unanimously.
There were no other applicants for the four vacancies on the ARB. The city is still seeking to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Lori Cain in April.
The Architectural Review Board is a five-member body that serves as an advisory body to the City Council on matters related to architectural design and aesthetics. Terms of board members are for two years.
Sylvia Cook was unanimously appointed by the council to the Library, Culture & Arts Commission. The Library Commission was recently expanded to include culture and arts. Cook is a design associate with Brotin Designs in Morgan Hill and co-founder of the Arts and Cultural Alliance, which is a program of the Morgan Hill Community Foundation.
In addition to Cook’s seat, the LCA commission is looking to fill another empty seat left by the resignation of Bert Benson at the July 20 meeting.
The Library, Culture and Arts Commission is a seven-member body which advises the council about library services, serves as a liaison between the city and the Santa Clara County Library, and serves as a liaison between private community groups supportive of the library’s programs and the city. Members serve for two years.
Appointed to the Mobile Home Rent Commission were Swanee Edwards, as the citizen at large representative, and Robert Koehler, who will serve as the mobile home park representative. Edwards is a retired construction administrator, and Koehler is assistant manager with Haven Management.
Edwards received three votes, specifically from Councilmen Larry Carr, Steve Tate and Kennedy. Incumbent Eric Gould, who sought reappointment, received two votes, from Kennedy and Councilman Greg Sellers. Gloria Subocz, a former mobile home commissioner who also applied for the position, received votes from Carr and Sellers. Koehler’s appointment was unanimous. He was the only applicant for the mobile home park representative seat.
The Mobile Home Rent Commission monitors the performance of the city’s mobile home rent stabilization ordinance. The commission is a five-member body, with each commissioner serving a two-year term.
The council also appointed Geno Acevedo, Robert Benich and Mike Davenport to the Planning Commission. Acevedo and Benich are incumbents; Davenport is new to the commission. Acevedo is the owner of El Toro Brewing Company. Benich is retired mechanical engineer. Davenport is manager of Corporate Compliance with Cisco Systems.
Benich and Davenport were unanimously appointed to the commission. The council votes tied with Acevedo and applicant Kyle Baker, vice president of marketing with California Micro Devices in Milpitas. In the end, Kennedy appointed Acevedo. The mayor’s final decision on this and all appointments were based on the applicant serving as a chairperson, assignment to a special project, and familiarity with local government.
The Planning Commission serves as an advisory body to the City Council on growth and development of the city. The commission is a seven member body and each commissioner serves a term of four years.
