BAKERSFIELD – Local champ Kelsey Jeffries added another victory to her professional boxing record Thursday night as the IFBA World title-holder won a unanimous decision over Tara Drain in Bakersfield.

In her non-title, six-round bout, Jeffries – who trains out of the Gilroy Community Youth Center gym on Sixth Street – received 60-54 tallies on all three judges scorecards over Drain, the WIBF Bantamweight champ who bulked up for the fight.

“It was a route,” trainer Rick Mello said. “(Drain) put up a good fight… Kelsey really finished strong with left hooks and double right hands and her body shots were horrendous. I don’t know how she took it.”

Mello said Jeffries (18-7-1) nearly recorded a knockout in the sixth round – but Drain wa saved by the final bell.

“It was a good tuneup for her world title fight coming up March 20,” Mello said.

Jeffries was originally scheduled to fight Mary Salcedo – who dropped out the day before and was replaced by Drain.
