The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, along with Morgan Hill-based manufacturer Specialized Bicycle Components, announced a voluntary recall Tuesday of about 3,000 model 2D bicycle helmets.

The helmet, which retailed for $200, was deemed hazardous by the commission after it failed to pass the CPSC’s safety standard test, stating that the helmets pose a serious head injury hazard to riders in a fall.

The model 2D helmets were available between July and August 2007 at authorized Specialized retail outlets and online.

According to Mike Sohm, a customer service representative for Specialized, consumers have been quite responsive to the recall as the manufacturer has received a healthy amount of recalled helmets in the past months.

Sohm also said the helmets are being re-manufactured and will be sent out to consumers by next month.

No injuries have been reported to the commission thus far.

Model “2D” is printed on the sides of the helmet in the rear.

The helmets were sold for men and women in matte black, silver, blue, pink and team colors.

The commission advises that consumers should stop using the recalled helmet immediately and return it to an authorized Specialized retailer to receive a free replacement or refund.

Specialized Bicycle Components has been doing business in Morgan Hill since 1974 and produces and variety of gear, including clothing, helmets and over 25 lines of bikes.

Many riders in recent years have used Specialized bicycles in the North American and European professional cycling circuit.

Many bicycle retailers don’t think that the recall will effect business or the reputation of Specialized products.

Bruce Hollibaugh, president of Concept Cyclery in Morgan Hill, said he will continue to work with and sell Specialized products.

“This is very rare and unusual in this business,” said Hollibaugh. “We are a Specialized-dominant store and they’ve been tremendous about making us aware of the recall through letters and e-mail. That’s the type of comapny they are. They really went above and beyond.”

Hollibaugh predicts that Specialized will not take a financial hit from the recall.
