Live Oak High product Chelsea Laning capped off an outstanding season by being selected to the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s Division II All-American team.

Laning, who just completed her freshman season with the first-year Cal State Monterey Bay women’s water polo team, is the first athlete to earn All-American honors in school history at the NCAA Division II level.

“Sweet,” said Laning when informed of the honor. “This really comes as a complete surprise to me but I’m very honored. This achievement was possible only with the help and support of my coaches, Gary Figueroa and Sherrie Vignau, and my teammates. I need to especially point out (junior teammate) Alex Davis. Alex is the heart and soul of our team and there is no question that I wouldn’t be in this position without her.”

Laning, a center, scored 100 goals with 18 assists for 118 points in 31 games. She ended up leading the Western Water Polo Association in points scored and goals scored per game, led NCAA Division II in goals scored per game, total goals and total points, and was second in NCAA Division II in points scored per game.

Laning had 19 hat tricks on the season and her 100 goals ranked her third in the country, in any division.

Cal State University Monterey Bay was 8-31 in its first season of competition.

Laning joins Lisa Mispley (an NAIA Academic All-American in 2002-03) as the second female All-American in school history.

“For a first year program to have an All-American is just simply amazing,” Coach Figueroa said. “From the start, I thought Chelsea would make an impact and she certainly did that. Chelsea had an outstanding season and as she continues to work hard, she will get better. This is an honor that is shared by the entire team. Chelsea would not have been in this position without each and every player on this squad.”

Members of the American Water Polo Coaches Association selected the squad.
