Swim coach Mack Haines’ theory about this year’s Live Oak High swim team will be put to an immediate test today when the Acorns host league rival Gilroy in both teams’ Tri-County Athletic League opener.

According to Haines, a resurgent Live Oak squad aiming to return to its customary spot atop the TCAL standings should be pushed to the limit by a much-improved Mustang team.

The dual meet is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start at the Live Oak pool.

“This could be the meet of the year,” Haines said. “(Gilroy has) a great team and we’re certainly rebounding from last year. It could come down to the final relays.”

After playing the part of perennial league champions for years, the Acorn swim program has been left without a TCAL title for a few years.

But Haines said he thinks that will change with a talented Live Oak roster this season.

“I think this is the year we have a shot at regaining that dominance,” he said.

Live Oak is led by All-American David Dunn, who is already headed to the University of the Pacific on a scholarship when his high school career is finished.

Haines said Dunn, who finished third at CCS in the 100 breast last season and is also particularly strong in the 200 IM, will compete in several events this season.

“He’s our ace in the hole,” Haines said. “He really is strong in every event. He’s one of the top swimmers in California.”

Adding depth to the Acorn boys lineup are middle distance swimmers Justin Short and Cameron Peachey, along with sprinters Ryan Gautschi, Shea Coleman and Kyle Fast.

Diver Lee Bell is also expected to be a contender for the individual league title this season.

On the Acorn girls squad, Laura Melroy has already qualified for CCS in a couple of events, while Ronni Gautschi, Susie Suchomel and Breanna Sennert will also provide depth.

In addition, freshman Laura Shope has shown a hint of her potential so far this season.
