Local product gets Spring Training invitation
Live Oak High product Brandon Villafuerte is getting a shot with a local major league baseball team. Earlier this week, Villafuerte signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants.

Villafuerte, a 1993 LO grad, was signed as a free agent and was extended an invitation to Spring Training, according to reports.

Last season, the 29-year-old right-hander was 0-3 with a 4.05 ERA in relief for Arizona before being released.

Villafuerte, who was drafted out of West Valley College in 1995, spent seven seasons in the minor leagues before getting a big league shot with San Diego in 2002.

He was released by the Padres after the 2003 season and signed with Arizona.
