The Live Oak boys team narrowly defeated Gilroy 27-29 at Gilroy. The Acorns were able to finish with the bare minimum of five guys after one competitor had to drop out with an asthma attack.

The Acorns were already without Nick Mott, who was excused to play soccer , and Josh Craig, who is still waiting for his double transfer papers after attending Los Gatos and earlier Live Oak.

Billy Wong took first place in the race after a neck and neck battle with Arnulfo Valesquez. Jesus Atanacio, Brent Hatakeyama and Jonathan Kamei placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Kamei edged out Gilroy’s Nate Barmore by a second.

“They really surprised us,” said Live Oak coach Dean Raymond. “They had three more runners than they had previously. We almost got our socks blown. If Billy or Jonathan would have lost lost the meet, we would have lost.”

Gilroy didn’t have a girls team, so Live Oak raced against themselves. Cobbie Jones ran a 21:31 on the course for Live Oak.

Sophomore Yasenia Miranda, running in her first year, finished with a 24:25.

Senior team captain Daniella King ran the course in 25 minutes flat coming off a couple injuries.

For the JV boys, senior Ismael Marisclan finished second with a time of 23:09. A couple freshmen finished right behind him – Colin Kay (23:15) and Josh Levy (23:53). Chris Quezada (24:51) and John Roddy (24:58) finished sixth and seventh.

“I am really pleased with JV effort,” Raymond said. “They are starting to learn more and more about cross country.”

Live Oak competes in the Stanford Invitational Saturday and then heads to Toro Park on Monday to run against Palma and Hollister.

“It should be a good race for second with Palma,” Raymond said.
