Live Oak continued to bounce back from an opening loss in Santa
Teresa Division boys soccer, as the Acorns played to a 2-2 tie with
Prospect on Tuesday at Live Oak High School.
The Acorns reaped an own goal by the Panthers and a score by
freshman Chase Vandenbrandhorninge in the first half, with Ben
Hartl picking up an assist. Vandenbradhorninge is closing in on 10
goals this season.
Live Oak continued to bounce back from an opening loss in Santa Teresa Division boys soccer, as the Acorns played to a 2-2 tie with Prospect on Tuesday at Live Oak High School.

The Acorns reaped an own goal by the Panthers and a score by freshman Chase Vandenbrandhorninge in the first half, with Ben Hartl picking up an assist. Vandenbrandhorninge is closing in on 10 goals this season.

Although it is early Live Oak (4-1-3, 1-1-1) is tied with Prospect (4-4-1, 1-1-1) and Branham for second place in the division behind Evergreen Valley (2-0-1 league), whom the Acorns visit Jan. 19.

Live Oak returns home Thursday (3:15 p.m.) to face James Lick and wraps a three-match week Saturday (5 p.m.) at Oak Grove.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Live Oak’s unbeaten run in the West Valley Division ended emphatically Tuesday in a 54-36 loss at Mount Pleasant.

The Cardinals (4-8, 3-0) gained sole possession of first place, as Previn Wong went for 19 points, and Dantorie Reeves and Isaac Olson contributed eight apiece.

Andrew Poonia scored 10 points for the Acorns (5-8, 2-1), who visit struggling James Lick on Thursday (7 p.m.), and Lincoln on Saturday (5:30 p.m.) in a key matchup.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Live Oak lost 44-26 Tuesday to a Willow Glen team that is slowly pulling away in the West Valley Division.

Alex Balala had seven points, Courtney Thomson went for six, and Kristi Kiss Martinez and Jocelyn Mendoza scored four to lead the Acorns (4-8, 1-2).

The Rams (9-3, 3-0), winners of six straight, received 19 points from Katy Drennan and nine from Briana Boyd.

Live Oak will try to break even in its four-game homestand Thursday (7 p.m.) against James Lick.

  • Sobrato lost track of Gunderson after the first quarter on the way to losing 55-40 Tuesday in San Jose.

The Bulldogs got a lift from junior post Alyssa Firato, who scored 15 points in her first game back since suffering a concussion in Sobrato’s Dec. 1 season opener.

Sobrato (3-10, 0-3) also received 11 points from Jessica Westall.

The Grizzlies (9-4, 3-0) moved into a tie with Santa Teresa for first place in the Santa Teresa Division behind 22 points by Irene Chavez and eight by Sabneer Bains.
