will advance to the league finals Saturday at Hartnell College in
Salinas.
HOLLISTER – Nine of Live Oak’s 10 hurdles and10 of its 11 distance runners who competed in the Tri-County Athletic League trials Wednesday will advance to the league finals Saturday at Hartnell College in Salinas.

“We didn’t have a lot of quantity, but we did have quality,” said Live Oak coach Dean Raymond. “They think missing only affects themselves. But it affects the team also. Just about everyone PR’d.”

Sophomore Jesus Atanacio and freshman Yesenia Miranda both took first in the 3200 meter race finals – the only finals held that day. Lisa Herrera finished second right behind Miranda. Both Herrera and Miranda also qualified in mile and half mile. Kenny Benner took sixth overall for the boys in the 3200.

Billy Wong placed first in the varsity1600, and Jason Alcarez took eighth. Senior Phi Le bettered his time by 25 second but just was short of qualifying for the finals in the 1600 meter. Kris Mott, who was ranked third coming into the race, took first in 800s and also qualified in 400s.

Brandon Powell, whose brother CJ finished fourth in CCS and just miss going to state, finished fifth in the 110 varsity hurdles and seventh in the 300 hurdles. Senior Daniel Martinez in his first year doing hurdles ranked 15th coming in and ended up just qualifying at ninth.

“It is people like Daniel with a work ethic and willingness to learn that make coaching hurdlers a pleasure.”

Sophomore Brandon Powell also qualified with a fifth in the high hurdles and seventh in the 300 hurdles. John Hart finished fourth in the 65 meter frosh soph hurdles.

In the girls 100 meter varsity hurdles, Leanne Lopez came in second, and Shelly Hart followed right behind her. Shannon Kelly, Dia Foster and Kristina Elmasu took three of the top four spots in both frosh soph hurdles for Live Oak. Leslie Dedios came in third in the 200 meter frosh soph race.

Jesus Atanacio finished sixth in the 1600 frosh soph race. In the frosh soph 400 meter dash, Mark Curtis, Justin Martin and John Roddy took the fourth, fifth and sixth spots. Matie Smith and Christina Schreiber took second and third in the girls frosh soph 400 race.

Four of the nine frosh soph boys who qualified to go on in the 800 meter race were from Live Oak. Justin Cates, who came in with a fourth ranking, took first and also placed third in the triple jump. Brent Hatakeyama was fourth and also took eighth in long jump and ninth in triple jump, Atanacio was seventh and Jonathan Kamei finished eighth. Kent Wu placed eighth in the boys 100 meter frosh soph.

Azucena Atanacio took first in the frosh soph shotput and had the fourth best distance in discuss. Tanya Tenorio came in eighth in varsity shot put and fifth in discus. Ashley Trask finished eight in varsity triple jump, and Mattie Smith finished fifth in frost soph long jump.

In Live Oak’s first year of resuming pole vault, Justin Cates and Mark Curtis tied for second in the frosh soph pole vault to advance to the CCS finals.
