After a tune-up win Tuesday over San Jose, Live Oak was attempting to finish the season with one loss to earn a “rubber” match with Del Mar that would decide the Blossom Valley Athletic League West Division winner.

The Acorns were 11-1 after blanking San Jose 7-0 to keep pace with the once-beaten Dons. If Live Oak won Thursday in its match against Sobrato, a playoff was pending 3:15pm Monday at Mt. Pleasant to decide the title. The Acorns and Dons exchanged 5-2 wins during the regular season.

Eric Matsumoto and Trevor Watson were dominant in the top two singles matches against San Jose, dispatching their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Yrbyn Davis and Jimmy Sheddon were also in top form winning their matches 6-1, 6-2, and 6-1, 6-0 respectively.

In doubles play, each pairing was able to take care of business in two sets. Aaron Melgar and Ryan Campbell won their match 6-1, 6-2, and Scott Alexander and Kevin Parsons beat their opponents 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 3 slot, Garrett Adkerson and Kenny Lee won convincingly 6-1, 6-0.

“I feel pretty confident in our boys,” said Live Oak coach Jennifer Yoder. “They played like animals against (Del Mar) last game and they came focused and ready to work. They are excited to play us and we are excited to play them.”

Meanwhile, the Acorns advanced one singles player and two doubles teams to the BVAL West Valley Division Singles Doubles Championship at Overfelt.

Watson, the No. 2 seed in singles, advanced to the semifinals. An injured Matsumoto lost in the first round in three sets. In doubles, No. 2 seeded Melgar and Campbell advanced to the semifinals, as did Parsons and Alexander.

Interestingly, the Acorns doubles teams will face Del Mar players in the competition that is scheduled at 1pm today at Overfelt. Watson takes on No. 3 seed Gabriel Zuniga of Overfelt.

The rain date is Tuesday.
