LIVE OAK HIGH SCHOOL junior Abe Butte is flanked by Dr. Alan Nishino, superintendent of the Morgan Hill Unified School District, and Live Oak teacher Donna Cowan.

Butte was a second-place finalist in the regional Rotary Club Youth Speech Contest April 22 at the Portola Plaza Hotel in Monterey.

Butte advanced to the regional competition after winning in the Rotary Youth Speech Contest regional semifinals in Watsonville on March 28 and defeating three other Rotary Club speech contest winners from Gilroy, San Juan Bautista and Hollister on March 21.

Butte is the son of Maria Elena Butte of Morgan Hill. Cowan is his advisor at Live Oak. He is South Coast regional vice president of the national FFA organization, an agricultural education program. He wants to attend a four-year university and is thinking about going into law.
