Live Oak’s Cross Country teams are taking shape as the year continues coming off a strong showing at the Half Moon Bay Artichoke Invite last weekend.

The men’s varsity team placed 5th out of 17 teams competing in the two-and-one-quarter mile race.

Andrew Taylor led the Acorns with a time of 12:53.

The ladies’ varsity team finished 14th of 26 teams with Cobbie Jones leading the pack of Acorn runners with a time of 14:12.

“It’s a unique distance,” said men’s coach Dean Raymond. “It’s the only time we get to do that.”

On Monday last week, the Acorns raced against North Salinas in Toro Park.

The men’s team won the event 20-43 with a Salinas runner winning the event. The ladies team narrowly lost to the Salinas team 30-29. The Sobrato Bulldogs also ran in the race, but it was a non-scoring event for the Bulldogs.

“All seven ran great,” Raymond said of his varsity runners.

For the ladies, it was a difficult defeat.

“It was heartbreaking, a tough loss for the ladies,” he said.

The Acorns will face Gilroy next Monday.

“We’ve got a lot of seniors and I’m pleased with their progress,” Raymond said. “They’re becoming more and more competitive. We’re looking forward to Gilroy on Oct. 10.”
