Morgan Hill – The Live Oak football team captured a share of the Tri County Athletic League crown with last weeks 28-27 victory over rival Gilroy and are seeded No. 6 heading into the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs this Saturday. The Acorns split the TCAL championship with San Benito and Palma, all had a league record of 4-1.

The Acorns face the No. 3 seeded Independence 76ers at Independence on Saturday at 7pm.

“We are approaching this game like it is any other week,” said Live Oak’s head coach Rick Booth. “We’re happy to be practicing and happy to be playing somebody different.”

Live Oak rallied from 20 points down against the Mustangs to take the lead late in the fourth quarter and come away with the win. Defensive lineman Eric Cifuentes dashed Gilroy’s last hopes by intercepting a pass on the Mustangs’ last drive.

The Acorns hope the momentum continues to roll in their direction when the face off against a tough Independence team. Live Oak knows it is up against a big, strong, fast team and will be reviewing film all week.

“When you get to the playoffs, you don’t know the teams as well,” explained Booth. “We’re going to do the best we can.”

Running backs Dustin Muhn and Kevin Abbott, who each rushed for more than 1,000 yards on the season, will be key in the Acorns’ offense, as will the offensive line.

“Both running backs have run well all year and our offensive line has created holes for them. Hopefully we can continue that,” said Booth. “Both guys are really unselfish and block equally as well as they run. When the defense goes after one of them, the other one picks it up.”
