The Lady Acorns started Tri-County Athletic League play with a win over the Notre Dame Spirits, 41-37, at home Friday night. Not only does it start the Acorns at 1-0 for league action, it is the first time in quite a few years that a Live Oak team has beaten the Spirits.
“It was a good win for us,” said Acorns coach Jeff Perkins. “We played a well-balanced game. Both teams played really solid defense.”
Colleen Henningsen led Live Oak with 16 points, five rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot and Mattie Borges added eight points, seven rebounds, two steals and one blocked shots in the win.
The Acorns and the Spirits were tied at 10 going into the second quarter. In the second quarter Live Oak opened up a 22-15 lead over Notre Dame.
After halftime the Acorns continue to lead over the Spirits, extending the lead to 29- 21. In the fourth period Notre Dame mounted a comeback, but Live Oak was able to keep the game out of reach by making its free throws down the stretch. Henningsen had eight of her 16 points in the fourth quarter.
“We were leading most of the game,” said Perkins. “They came back and took over the lead in the fourth quarter. We hung in there. Sarah Goodere was back from injury this game and helped us out. We got to rest some people. It was a good victory for us.”
Junior Goodere contributed four points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal at the guard position while teammate Anna Curley finished with five points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Lauren Shutzler led the Spirits with 11 points.
Live Oak got a complete team effort on offense and defense. Megan Gulla came up big on defense with five blocked shots and two steals and had three points and two rebounds in the game. Bre Campbell also contribute three points, dished out four assists, pulled in three rebounds, with three steals and one blocked shot. Katie Armstrong added two points and two rebounds for the Acorns.
The win gives Live Oak a great start in the very competitive TCAL and gives them momentum heading into its game on Wednesday night in Gilroy when they face the Mustangs.
“They’re (Gilroy) probably the best team in the TCAL if the preseason is any indication,” said Perkins. “We have been working really hard on our defense in preparation and we need to avoid turning the ball over. Our team will do OK in the TCAL as long as we don’t have any injuries. We’re healthy right now.”
