Morgan Hill – Live Oak entered its past two games with a 5-2 record in BVAL Mount Hamilton Division play and was hoping to avenge those two losses to Westmont and Leland.
Despite outstanding efforts in both matches, the Acorns came up short in a pair of four-game losses.
Live Oak hosted Westmont on Thursday and battled the whole way through. The Acorns lost a close first game 25-22 before rebounding to win the second game by the same score.
The Warriors, who took over sole possession of second place with the win, earned another close victory in the third game by winning 25-20 and took the decisive fourth game 25-22.
Senior Talia Reyes-Ortiz led Live Oak with nine kills.
The Acorns travelled to San Jose to face first-place Leland on Tuesday and played the Chargers close but couldn’t get over the hump to earn the win.
Live Oak fell 25-23 in a tight first game and fell down two games to none with a 25-17 loss in the second game. The Acorns responded by gutting out a 27-25 win in the third game, but dropped the match with a 25-18 loss in the fourth game.
Katarina Cinkova paced Live Oak with 14 kills.
Girls Field Hockey
Morgan Hill – Live Oak held a halftime lead against first-place and undefeated Los Altos, but couldn’t hold on and lost 2-1.
The Acorns, who are in second place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division at 8-4-1 overall and 6-3-1 in league, would have pulled to within a game of the Wildcats with a win.
The loss was preceded by a 3-2 win over Leigh on Monday. Senior forward Taylor Sutton opened the scoring for the Acorns off an assist from junior defender Sarah Locarnini. Junior forward Kami Tersini also scored in the first half with junior forward Robin Nelson providing the assist and sophomore midfielder Brooke Willis an unassisted goal in the second half for what proved to be the game-winner.
Willow Glen 5, Sobrato 0
Morgan Hill – Sobrato dropped a tough game against Willow Glen on Wednesday. The Bulldogs also fell to Del Mar 2-0 on Friday.
Sobrato entered the game against Del Mar with a two-game league winning streak on the line.
Boys Water Polo
Morgan Hill – Live Oak, fresh off its third-place finish in the South Valley Polo-Fest, routed Evergreen Valley 15-6 on Tuesday.
Sam Cretcher and Kyle Fast each scored four goals and Cameron Peachey added three for the Acorns, who jumped out to an 11-2 lead by halftime.
Girls Water Polo
Morgan Hill – Live Oak had no problems taking care of visiting Piedmont Hills, shutting out the Pirates 17-0.
Melissa Poon led the way with three goals, while Ashley Rojas, Kristi Short, Allysa Pinarbasi, Katie Rick and Laura Shope all scored twice for the Acorns.
Lincoln 19, Sobrato 4
San Jose – The Bulldogs couldn’t contain first-place Lincoln in a loss on the road Tuesday.
Lincoln remained unbeaten in the Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division with the win.
JV Football
Monterey – Monte Vista Christian couldn’t maintain its 19-10 third quarter lead and lost its Monterey Bay League opener to Monterey 25-19 last Friday.
Morgan Hill resident Charlie McClung had 76 yards of total offense for the Mustangs (1-3-1, 0-1). David Dickstein, another Morgan Hill resident, had six tackles for Monte Vista and Gilroy product Ryan Miyano had 67 yards passing.
