The filing period for city, school district and Gavilan College offices has been open since last Monday but, so far, few potential candidates have taken advantage of the opportunity.
Only Bob Griesinger has picked up papers for the Morgan Hill School Board – Monday – at the Registrar of Voters. Griesinger is a resident of Coyote Valley.
Three current school board members, George Panos, Del Foster and Jan Masuda had declined to run again. All three were the subject of an attempt to recall them. The terms are for four years.
Trustee Tom Kinoshita resigned in March. Whoever replaces Kinoshita will serve for two years.
At City Hall both Mayor Dennis Kennedy and Councilman Greg Sellers have announced that they will both run for the two-year mayor’s seat. Kennedy has pulled papers but has not returned them. Sellers is not up for re-election as a councilman. Council terms are for four years.
Sellers and Kennedy do have authorization from the state to raise campaign funds.
Councilman Larry Carr has said he would be running for a second term; Councilwoman Hedy Chang said she has not yet decided whether to run for a third term or not.
The fifth council member, Steve Tate, was re-elected in 2002.
City Clerk Irma Torrez said she would be pulling papers to run again. City Treasurer Mike Roorda has turned in his paperwork for the Nov. 2 election, Torrez said.
She said there has been little interest shown by citizens wanting to run for council. In 2002 Kennedy, Tate and Sellers ran unopposed.
Three Gavilan College seats are up for grabs, one each in the Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Benito County areas.
Tom Breen, a retired judge and current trustee representing Hollister has picked up his papers but hasn’t returned them yet though he said he would.
Mark Dover, who is completing his first term representing the Gilroy area, also says he will run for re-election.
Morgan Hill area Trustee Leonard Washington’s seat is also up in November. He could not be reached for comment Monday about any election plans.
Because the Gavilan College district covers both South Santa Clara and San Benito counties, they must file in both areas.
The last day to file is Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. but, Torrez said, it is safer to turn in papers at least the day before because the Registrar checks signatures for validity and the extra day would give a candidate time to find more if not enough were certified as correct. The filing deadline for Morgan Hill School District will be extended a five days because the incumbents are not running.
