All Measure A and B projects completed on time and on budget

Dear Editor:

I wanted to respond to the letter entitled: “It’s another con job in the works – no vehicle tax for the state parks!” published on Feb. 9.

The Silicon Valley Leadership Group ran the campaign for the 1996 Measures A and B in Santa Clara County and served all nine years during the life of the measure on the county’s Citizens Watchdog Committee to oversee the use of the funds.

Measures A and B included 19 road and rail transit projects, including:

  • Adding additional lanes on Highway 101 between Morgan Hill and San Jose

  • Street maintenance and pothole repairs in all 15 cities and towns in Santa Clara County, as well as on county roads

  • Improvements on Caltrain, from Gilroy up the Peninsula

  • Signal Timing on all eight county expressways

All 19 projects were delivered on-time and on-budget, or under-budget. Instead of being diverted for other uses, the money raised was spent locally on the projects promised to voters.

These projects have made improvements in Santa Clara County that are hard to imagine living without.

A less costly approach to team building available locally

Dear Editor,

I noticed that the Gilroy City Council was considering spending $6,400 on a team building consultant to help bring them together. I think I have a better idea. We here at Garlic City books have several excellent titles that may be of assistance to the council.

  • “Leadership for Dummies” by Marshall Loeb, $10

  • “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team” by Patrick Lencioni, $11.99

  • “Getting to Resolution, turning conflict into collaboration” by Stewart Levine, $12.48

The last suggestion, a thoroughly revised and updated work, offers new principles and new tools to show how to get to real, lasting resolution of personal, business, organizational, or community conflict. It is the book the Morgan Hill City Council used with success. We have one copy here at Garlic City but several new at BookSmart in Morgan Hill which I would be happy to bring to Garlic City for them. Also, in the next few weeks my ice cream counter will open so maybe the council could meet here, have some ice cream and relax.

The time is now for restaurants to provide nutrition information

Dear Editor,

Consumers are looking for more detailed information about the food they eat and the time is right for restaurants of all sizes to start providing nutrition information.

As obesity rates rise and more consumers are seeking a healthier lifestyle, foodservice establishments that provide nutrition information will not only comply with pending national legislation, but will appeal to health-conscious customers.

According to the National Restaurant Association, a uniform national nutrition standard will allow consumers access to detailed nutrition information that meets their needs while providing clarity, consistency and flexibility for restaurants in how that information is provided.

They are urging members of Congress to co-sponsor the Labeling Education and Nutrition Act (LEAN Act) which will provide a national nutrition labeling standard for foodservice establishments with 20 or more locations.

By highlighting healthier options, restaurants can distinguish themselves by meeting the growing demand for nutrition information, establish a competitive edge over their competitors and, most importantly, provide an important service to their customers.
