It’s Time For Bush Supporters to Wake Up

Dear Editor,

Times letter writer C. Eoff’s view is of the 26 percent of our country that still support our President’s failed policies. The 74 percent that think we need to change our policies and our role in Iraq seem to have no bearing on what needs to be done. This 26 percent and the President choose to ignore the will of the majority and have forgotten that the President works for the people with the duty to govern the country according to the collective will of the nation.

As for the President’s strong character and honesty, have you forgotten about the so-called weapons of mass destruction that posed an immediate threat to our security. There were none. How about the so-called connection between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein? Not true. Do you remember the statement about Iraq trying to purchase yellow cake nuclear material from Nigeria? Not true. Where were Bush’s strong faith-based beliefs when he allowed the secret CIA prisons that were using torture on prisoners of war? Excuse me, I mean “enemy combatants.” It also takes a strong character to cut funding for veterans that return from serving their country with lifelong physical and emotional disabilities.

I was amused by Eoff’s concern about having to read headlines about another sleazy affair by my president. It seems to me that the multiple stories about our current president’s fellow constituents under investigation, under indictment and on their way to prison for breaking laws in lieu of vows would make the affair story a back page news in comparison to the culture of corruption headline news.

It is time for the 26 percent to look at the current conditions in Iraq and call it what it is, a military blunder with our troops stuck in the middle of a civil war between three different factions with multi-layered aggressive perspectives of each other. The only people benefiting from this mess is the corporate insiders Halliburton, Bechtel and the oil companies.

California Needs the Healthy Pets Act

Dear Editor,

Lawmakers describe as “unprecedented” the volume of support letters, faxes, and phone calls they have received regarding AB1634, the California Healthy Pets Act. The bill has passed the Assembly and is now moving on to the Senate.

  • There is a terrible crisis in California – more than 800,000 dogs and cats are abandoned each year. In the overcrowded and overburdened shelters across the state, more than 400,000 of these dogs and cats are killed because there are no homes for them.

  • Taxpayers spend more than $250 million each year to shelter and kill dogs and cats. With the wide availability of free or low-cost spay/neuter services available, there is no reason why taxpayers should subsidize this cycle of killing.

  • Early spay and neuter is safe and effective and also provides numerous health benefits and protections for cats and dogs.

  • Mandatory spay/neuter laws are the humane solution and are already successfully working in nine jurisdictions in California, including San Mateo, Lake, Santa Cruz and Stanislaus Counties and the cities of San Bernardino and Sacramento. Santa Cruz County shelter populations have dropped by 50 percent since a mandatory spay/neuter law went into effect.

Please contact State Senator Abel Maldonado and urge him to support AB1634:
