Letter carriers from South San Jose to Morgan Hill and Gilroy will be collecting canned food on Saturday, May 8, as part of a nationwide food drive organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service, the AFL-CIO, the United Way and Campbell’s Soups.

Residents who recieve flyers in their mailboxes requesting donations are invited to leave non-perishable food items by their mailboxes for pick up. Those who do not recieve a flyer, but would like to participate, may bring their food items to the local post office.

With more than 678 local agencies and distribution sites helping in the area, the food collected will be distributed directly to more than 165,000 individuals throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. This is the largest door-to-door food drive in the nation – raising 321,106 pounds of food last year alone. Those pounds collected produced 250,865 meals for low-income families and individuals in need.

Especially needed are items that are high in protein such as powdered milk, peanut butter, pasta, meals in a can, tuna, canned foods with pop top lids, low-sugar cereal and 100 percent fruit juices.

Need to get food? No worries, Second Harvest can help. To reap the benefits of this food drive and receive food call 1-800-984-3663 for no charge.
