Yet another class of new leaders will be sent back into the community Monday night with leadership skills sharpened and ready to serve Morgan Hill.
The Leadership Morgan Hill Class of 2004 will gather in Guglielmo Winery’s outdoor garden for the annual graduation. They’ll recount what they learned over nine months of classes, retreats and outings all designed to give them tools to understand and serve every part of the community.
The keynote speaker will be Manuel Valerio, community relations manager for Fry’s Electronics.
Some activities were fun, others interesting and still others hard work; all forged 17 classmates into a team. One of 56 Leadership programs in California, Leadership began in Morgan Hill in 1995. This year’s class helped to clean up and renovate the historic Machado School as a class project.
The nine-month leadership program is designed to make class members aware of the local political, economic and government structures in the community.
With the support and interaction of many current community, business and government leaders, whose skills and decisions are shaping the city now and in the future, class members learn new skills and develop a deeper understanding of critical issues such as crime, economic development, education, the media and human services.
With new understanding, Leadership graduates have the opportunity to become a part of a network of corporate and community leaders who are committed to making Morgan Hill even greater. Some businesses send a student every year, strengthening their ties to the community. Gavilan College, Anritsu, the City of Morgan Hill, among others, benefit from their employees meeting and networking with employees from other parts of the community.
The selection process takes place from September through November of each year. One must only live or work in Morgan Hill. Classes meet six times all day on Fridays, eight evening sessions and three one-and-two-day retreats.
