Wolfsmith trailed gold medalist Samuel Sutherland of The Woodlands, Tx. by just 20 seconds after a 375-meter swim, 10K bike ride and 2.5K run. The local standout completed the route in 42:09.
“Lance had the biggest win of his season, or ever,” Lance’s father and coach Dave Wolfsmith said.
Wolfsmith trailed bronze medalist Greg Harper of Walnut Creek by more than a minute and a half after the swim, and was back in the pack in 13th.
But Wolfsmith turned it on during the bike ride and the transition to the run, overtaking his Bay Area rival..
The local standout was gaining on leader Sutherland in the run but ran out of time, according to Dave Wolfsmith.
This was Wolfsmith’s first national triathlon event though he competed at the Junior National Championships in cycling in Utah earlier this summer.
A nationally ranked cyclist and champion cross-country runner, Wolfsmith will begin classes at Sobrato High later this month. Wolfsmith also won the Hammerhead Triathlon in Gilroy this summer.
Junior Wolfpak teammate Matt Sosa of Gilroy also competed at the USA Triathlon event. His results were not available.
